Day Trips from Osaka: Nara, Kyoto, Uji, Himeji, and Kobe Compared

Osaka is a convenient base for day trips: Nara, Kyoto, Uji, Kobe, and Himeji are all reachable by train in about an hour or less. The hard part is choosing. This guide compares them by travel time from Osaka, what you will pay to get in, and how much of the day each trip needs.

Train times, fares, opening hours, and admission fees were checked on official websites on November 2, 2026. Each travel time below says which stations and which train it refers to, because Osaka has several major stations. Prices are in yen, the currency you pay in Japan; dollar amounts are my own rough conversion at ¥157.80 = $1 (the MUFG Bank mid-rate on November 2, 2026).

Quick answer

  • Half a day: Fushimi Inari Taisha (Kyoto) or Uji. Keihan trains from Yodoyabashi reach both; the one-way fare is ¥480 (about $3) to Fushimi-Inari and ¥490 (about $3) to Uji.
  • A full, easy day: Nara. Kintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara took 37 minutes for ¥680 (about $4) in the official route search, and Todai-ji’s Great Buddha Hall is ¥800 (about $5) for adults.
  • A full day with a big sight: Himeji Castle, about 57 minutes from Osaka by JR Special Rapid Service. Admission is ¥2,500 (about $16) for visitors 18 and over; last entry is 4:00 p.m.
  • Kyoto’s Arashiyama takes a transfer at Katsura on the Hankyu line, so plan a full day if you also want to see central Kyoto.

Day trips at a glance

If you only have half a day, choose Fushimi Inari or Uji; for a full day, Nara or Himeji are the easiest big trips.

Fares are one-way adult fares for the basic ticket only, without seat reservations or paid seats (such as the JR A-Seat). Times and fares come from the official route searches of Kintetsu (a weekday departure around 10:00 a.m.) and JR West (a departure around 10:00 a.m. on November 10, 2026); other trains may take longer. I could not confirm Hankyu or Hanshin fares on an official page, so they are not listed.

Nara: temples and deer in one easy trip

Nara is the easiest full-day trip from Osaka, with a direct Kintetsu train from Namba and the Great Buddha at Todai-ji.

  • Getting there: Kintetsu’s route search showed a Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara with no transfers, 37 minutes, ¥680 (about $4) for an adult. From JR Osaka Station, JR West’s route search showed a Yamatoji Rapid to JR Nara Station, 50 minutes, ¥840 (about $5) for the basic fare. The two routes start from different Osaka stations, so pick the one closer to your hotel.
  • Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden): open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from November to March, and 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from April to October. Admission is ¥800 (about $5) for adults (university students and older). Todai-ji says payment is cash only and that it is open every day unless there is a special event or emergency.

About the deer: the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation reminds visitors that the deer are wild animals that can sometimes act aggressively. It asks visitors not to approach or touch them carelessly, and to hand over deer crackers (shika senbei) quickly. Teasing a deer by holding back a cracker, or pretending to have one, can stress and excite it.

Fushimi Inari Taisha (Kyoto): the torii gate shrine

Fushimi Inari works well as a half-day trip, but take a local or express train, because Keihan limited express trains skip Fushimi-Inari Station.

  • By Keihan: the one-way adult fare from Yodoyabashi (Osaka) to Fushimi-Inari is ¥480 (about $3), according to Keihan’s fare table revised October 1, 2025. Kyoto City’s official travel site notes that limited express trains do not stop at Fushimi-Inari Station. The shrine says the station is about a 5-minute walk east.
  • By JR: take a JR Special Rapid Service train from Osaka to Kyoto (29 minutes and ¥580, about $4, in JR West’s route search), then the JR Nara Line to Inari Station. The shrine says Inari Station is right by the shrine and 5 minutes from Kyoto Station.
  • Shrine rules: Fushimi Inari Taisha asks visitors not to eat or drink while walking on the grounds, except in the designated free rest areas.

Uji: Byodo-in and a quieter half day

Uji is a relaxed half-day trip with Byodo-in, and it is easy to combine with Fushimi Inari because both are on the Keihan line.

  • Getting there: Byodo-in’s official access map shows two routes from Osaka: Keihan Limited Express from Yodoyabashi to Chushojima (39 minutes) and the Keihan Uji Line to Uji (15 minutes), or the JR Special Rapid Service from Osaka to Kyoto (27 minutes) and the JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid to Uji (17 minutes). Byodo-in is a 10-minute walk from Uji Station. The Keihan fare from Yodoyabashi to Uji is ¥490 (about $3).
  • Byodo-in: the garden and the Hoshokan museum are open 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (last entry 5:15 p.m.), and adult admission is ¥700 (about $4). There is no garden-only ticket.
  • Inside the Phoenix Hall: tours run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. with up to 35 people per group, first come, first served from 9:10 a.m. Byodo-in asks for a ¥300 (about $2) donation per person.

Arashiyama (Kyoto): bamboo, river, and Tenryu-ji

Arashiyama needs a transfer from Osaka, so it fits best as a full day on its own.

  • Getting there: Kyoto City’s official travel site explains that from the Hankyu Kyoto Line you transfer at Katsura Station to the Hankyu Arashiyama Line and ride to the last stop, Arashiyama.
  • Tenryu-ji: the garden is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last entry 4:50 p.m.), and garden admission is ¥500 (about $3) for high school students and older. Entering the temple buildings costs ¥300 more.
  • Walking times: Tenryu-ji says it is a 15-minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama Station and 13 minutes from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.

Himeji: Japan’s famous white castle

Himeji Castle is a full-day trip, and you should arrive well before the 4:00 p.m. last entry.

  • Getting there: the Himeji Convention & Visitors Bureau lists about 57 minutes from Osaka to JR Himeji Station by JR Special Rapid Service (the train in JR West’s route search took 1 hour 3 minutes, with a basic fare of ¥1,460, about $9), or about 1 hour 27 minutes from Umeda to Sanyo-Himeji Station by Sanyo Electric Railway. The castle is about a 20-minute walk from the station, or a Shinki Bus to Otemon-mae and a 5-minute walk.
  • Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., last entry 4:00 p.m. The castle is closed December 29 and 30.
  • Admission: ¥2,500 (about $16) for visitors 18 and over; under 18 is free. A combined ticket with Koko-en Garden is ¥2,600 (about $16).
  • Crowds: to protect the building, entry to the main keep is limited to 1,000 people per hour. The city sells timed digital tickets for smoother entry, but says they do not guarantee priority inside when the castle is crowded.

Kobe: the closest city trip

Kobe is the quickest trip from Osaka, and Ikuta Shrine and the Kitano district of old Western-style houses are both within walking distance of Sannomiya.

Kobe’s official tourism site, Feel Kobe, says Kobe can be reached from Osaka in as little as 21 minutes, and that central Sannomiya is served by JR and several private railways. In JR West’s route search, a Special Rapid Service train from Osaka to Sannomiya took 21 minutes, with a fare of ¥420 (about $3).

  • Ikuta Shrine: a 5-minute walk from Sannomiya Station (all lines), according to a Feel Kobe walking course. Feel Kobe describes it as a shrine with more than 1,800 years of history, and says the name “Kobe” is believed to come from the shrine’s former lands.
  • Kitano Ijinkan district: after Kobe’s port opened in 1868, foreign residents built more than 200 Western-style houses here, and Kobe City says about 16 are open to the public today. It is about a 15-minute walk from JR Sannomiya Station, or about 10 minutes from JR Shin-Kobe Station. Feel Kobe’s course walks north from Ikuta Shrine into Kitano, so the two combine easily.

How to choose by your time

Match the trip to the hours you have: Fushimi Inari or Uji for a morning, and Nara, Arashiyama, or Himeji for a full day.

  • A free morning or afternoon: Fushimi Inari or Uji (both on the Keihan line), or Kobe.
  • One full day, easy transfers: Nara by Kintetsu from Namba, with no transfer on the train I checked.
  • One full day, one big sight: Himeji Castle. Arrive early, especially in busy seasons, because entry to the main keep is limited per hour.
  • Two half-day trips in one day: Fushimi Inari and Uji are both on the Keihan line, so they combine well.
